Across the nation, rallies were held today in opposition to the policies implemented by President Donald Trump. Dubbed “Hands Off,” the initiative was started by Indivisible which called for people to unite on April 5th. North East Indivisible Lake County IL, Lake County Democratic Women and Lake County Democratic Party organized the local effort.
At the corner of Grand Avenue and Hunt Club Road in Gurnee, over 2500 people from our community stood together in rejection of the policies from Trump and Elon Musk. Attendees called this a critical moment for the health and future of America, citing the attacks on the rule of law, social security cutbacks, destroying relationships with allies and harm to working people throughout our country.
“Taking a chain saw to education, social security and health care just to fund a tax cut for billionaires makes me sick,” said Joan Miller. “I am very concerned for my grand children.”
Mary Edly-Allen, President of the Lake County Democratic Women said, ”I am heartened by the amazing turnout today. People deserve a federal government that protects the social security benefits they earned, supports education and makes sensible decisions which make our nation stronger. We all need to stay engaged and involved.”
“People are very concerned about what they’re seeing and hearing from Elon Musk, Donald Trump, and their MAGA allies, whether it’s hurting veterans, threatening Social Security, rolling back rights, or tanking the economy,” said Lake County Democrats Chair Lauren Beth Gash. “Today’s demonstration was about saying, ‘Hands off!’ to Musk, Trump, and cowardly Republican politicians here and across the country, to tell them to stop with the reckless right-wing antics that hurt real people in so many ways.”
Just this week, Trump announced a sweeping set of tariffs that sent financial markets throughout world plummeting. Trump’s tariffs threaten to cause inflation and ultimately lead to a recession. The Dow Jones lost 15% of its value, shrinking 401k savings plans. Trump was on his golf course at Mar-a-lago with Saudi billionaires as the sell off took place.
It is essential that we as a nation stand together and demand reasonable, well considered policy from our federal government, instead of the erosion of democracy and withdrawal from the rest of the world. Today the people of our community joined together and did exactly that.
