In a surprising turn of events in the upcoming municipal election, Travis Haley announced his candidacy as a write-in candidate for the Round Lake Area Library Board. One of the three seats up this cycle became vacant due to a current board member not seeking re-election.
Haley, a resident of the Round Lake area, submitted the required forms needed to run as a write-in candidate on January 30th, 2025, according to county records.
Haley feels that his background in community engagement has equipped him with a unique perspective on the needs of library patrons, and the importance of a thriving library system in fostering literacy and lifelong learning.
Haley commented on his motivation to run as a write-in candidate saying, “I am running for the Round Lake Area Library Board because the recent referendum that would have increased our property taxes by $400 per household was clearly rejected by the voters. It is concerning that the current library administration is considering bringing this issue back for another vote, showing a disregard for the will of the community. It’s time for us to respect the voice of the voters and focus on truly serving their needs.”
Running as a write-in candidate presents unique challenges. For a write-in candidate to receive a vote, voters must physically write their names when casting their ballots this election cycle. Haley is urging residents to take an active role in their local governance by writing his name on their ballots. “I have been to many meetings over a year and half, and they are still under the mindset of getting this $36 million referendum through despite losing the vote last year. I think the residents’ voices matter, that’s why I am running.” Haley said.
To support his campaign, Haley is leveraging social media and community events to raise awareness about his candidacy and the importance of the library. If elected, Haley will join the six current board members, which make up the governing body of Round Lake Area Library, which services more than 20,000 residents.
